Touchless green time request for people with limited mobility

Last spring, the Office for Mobility and Civil Engineering proved that accessibility is high on the agenda of the City of Münster. A physically disabled road user approached those responsible with a request to find a solution to the problem that he was unable to operate the request push button at a traffic light with his shortened arm.

It quickly became clear that a non-touch request option had to be created. Since this was a traffic light system from Swarco Traffic Systems GmbH, the employees of the city of Münster contacted the company to find a technical solution. It emerged that this was an ideal application for LOC.id technology.

LOC.id is an app-based system that communicates using the Bluetooth transmission standard. Mobility-impaired people with an app installed on their smartphone are recognized at LOC.id-equipped traffic lights and the appropriate request - for example, walk signal or orientation tone volume - is started automatically. In Münster, the demand for a green time request was met in this way and the road user concerned is very satisfied with the implementation and functionality of the system, so that the city is now considering expanding it to other areas.

Exemplary, also for other cities, when it comes to improving accessibility in public spaces.
